Matthew joined BELi in 2023 as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT). Previously, he completed his master’s degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering focusing on building aerodynamics and its effects on indoor air quality.
His role at BELi includes analyzing cost-effective strategies for deep energy reductions in low-rise commercial buildings using RETScreen Expert. Additionally, he upgraded RETScreen Expert’s building envelope properties tool, updating and expanding the material thermal conductivities database and revising thermal bridging methodology for improved accuracy.
Matthew assists with building enclosure consulting for major renovations, evaluating the thermal resistance and embodied carbon of retrofit assemblies. This involves utilizing an internal calculator as well as THERM software. He also assists with field reviews by diagnosing envelope areas with air leakage, quantifying air leakage rates, and spray rack testing to meet appropriate standards.
Additionally, he conducts masonry testing for heritage buildings, assessing its hygrothermal properties, compressive strength, and freeze-thaw vulnerability to guide retrofit strategies.
Matthew holds certifications as a Passive House Designer (CHPD) and a RETScreen Expert (CRE).
