BELi used their expertise in embodied carbon analysis to help with a sustainably-conscious community revitalization project in British Columbia, halfway between Vancouver and Kelowna.  The Spuzzum First Nation, an unincorporated First Nations settlement of the Nlaka’pamux First Nations government, was expanding their community house. They hired the Human Studio Architecture + Urban Design firm, who brought BELi on board. The goal of the project was to build a “highly-energy efficient building that produces on-site, or procures, carbon-free renewable energy or high- quality carbon offsets in an amount sufficient to offset the annual carbon emissions associated with building materials and operation without the need for a transition plan”. It also had to meet the Zero Carbon Building Design Standards to qualify for Green and Inclusive Community Buildings Program funding. BELi provided environmental life cycle analysis of the proposed building structure and materials and offered recommendations to reduce project embodied carbon impacts.

Embodied Carbon: Greenhouse gas emissions arising from the manufacturing, transportation, installation, maintenance, and disposal of building materials.
